Dirty Beauty Secrets

(A haiku collection)
Preparation-H
Hides bags like a girl with a
Shopping addiction
--
Jar of Vaseline;
Crumpled, dirty tissues
Left by the bed
--
Place cool cucumber
Down on swollen skin
Not carry-on baggage

Masquerade

We dance in life’s masquerade
Knowing it’s all a charade
Masks on, smiles bright
Eyes reveal all, out like a light
Life is a masquerade!
And fake it we do
Partnering with a pleasantry or two
In an effort to appear sane
In this dance of pain
Life is a masquerade!
Hiding gut-wrenching truths
Afraid to let the marbles fall loose
Left exposed on the floor
For the world to trounce and ignore
Life is a masquerade!
A Phantom side of the face
Too dark and disturbing to embrace
Because ugly is something shunned
By a society on prescribed elation
Life is a masquerade!
But there are too many stories to tell
About this slow dance in hell
So these masks we pull back
Courage to tell our stories at last
Revealing this masquerade!
Ending this masquerade!

Night Caps

(A haiku collection)

He ordered Ginger
And whiskey before leaving
To play with fire
_

Too many dirty
Martinis on rooftops lead to
Penthouse bathroom lines
_

Tennessee whiskey
The honey in my tea
Sweet pillow talk

Escape

These hands that know me well
Inciting a rapturous, sanguine swell
Shooting buds erect like bee stings
Electricity enveloping every part of me
Ah, to be alone and set so free!

White Rabbits

Emptiness
For miles and miles it seems
Emptiness
Exceeding reality TV
Starless skies and soulless eyes
That’s what you’ll find
In this white rabbit hole
Of ulcer-inducing
Prescribed perfection
Bottled fresh daily
Addict’s special
Gobble ‘em up till they’re gone
Emptiness
What do you mean
There’s no more?
It’s been called in
This murder by white rabbits
That gnaw away
Till blood is drawn and bone is gone
Emptiness
Without those powdery, white pearls
No strength to escape
This echoing chaos in my head
Holding me down
In this white rabbit hole of
Emptiness

Death Notice

R.I.P. red strands lying dead
Bleeding on pillows of this hospital bed.
Victims of life’s friendly fire;
Crushed by the weight in my head.

Sanguine Trails

The artist in me strikes against the page
Words surging in a lustful fury
This mad, love affair dressed in red ink --
Our blood flows like one in unison.
She kissed my cheeks with rouge-stained lips
A good-bye as I leapt into a fiery, lover’s tryst.
When he burned me, embers still smoldering,
She held me to her breast, stroking my hair,
Leaving tendrils ablaze around my face --
Our hearts beating like one in unison.
Fallen, I danced at the edge of hell,
Flames lapping at my legs, engulfing me.
But she spat me back onto the warm, hard Earth.
Anger erupting at the core of me,
Spewing like hot, bubbling lava.
There she left me in her sanguine trail,
Shedding a tear into tempestuous, blue seas.
And I fell into her blazing sunset,
Flowing like blood into Nature’s veins
Where I searched for life again
In this lifeless landscape.

The True Colossus

Rid me of your affected, your indifferent,
Your swaddled children of the elite,
The trust fund babies with a foot in every door.
These sheltered socialites I abhor.

Show me these indignant with delicate hands
Not having worked a day of hard labor,
And I’ll show you the real deal,
This concrete island’s backbone made of steel.

They live in outer boroughs,
Saving money on lower rents.
But long hours spent commuting,
Leave them emotionally and physically spent.

Meager paychecks and cost of living
Clear out their bank accounts.
But the thought of quitting and moving away
Is not an acceptable route.

Because they moved here for good reason
Hopes and dreams they must achieve
Creating their own opportunities
Success never an absolute guarantee.

Yet they strive to make a difference,
Finding time to help out others.
Volunteering for good causes,
Like Big Sisters and Big Brothers.

These are the inspirational doers
That I’ve come to know and love
Deeper than the surface scum
I’ve tried to rid my life of.

Because, in the end, the world won’t care
What designer bag’s on your shoulder,
About your prep school, East Hampton house,
Or Botox use as you grow older.

Give me people with a positive impact
On these boroughs and beyond.
To you I raise my pen and glass
For a promising future to all at last!

Lost Souls

(A haiku collection)

Squatters in tunnels
Piss on the rat race – air reeks
Of indifference.
--
Slouched in a stall drunk
Off cheap beer, calling numbers
Left for a good time.
--
Subway doors open
Where a homeless man retreats –
Lost hopes and dreams exit.

Immigrants

(A haiku collection)

The Chinese woman
Shuffling from trash bin to bin
Glass fortune within.
--
The cab driver sleeps
In his car seats smell of sex
From rides after hours.
--
The Ukraine next door
Keeps windows and shades open
Kielbasa in hand.

The Lotus-Eyed One

She holds the fragile beauty of an autumn day
On the brink of being blown away
By Winter’s bone chilling breath.
The last reign before coldness settles in,
Wrapping Earth with her warm, brilliant color.
Her delicate petals shedding like loose, falling lashes,
Making a wish for life to spring up anew.
Then, brimming with unyielding determination,
She surges up through the depths of Nature’s womb
With strong stems bearing beautiful blossoms,
And she winks at the waning, winter sun
With wide-eyed wisdom of what’s to come.

The Gin Man

I once had a mate named Edwin
Whose morning mouthwash was gin.
Until one day
He stumbled his way
Head first down the stairs splitting his chin!

This very same mate, surname Moya,
Had habits that could truly annoy ya.
But he’s been in my heart
Since his depart
To golden, sunshiny California.

Journal Writing 101

~ for my nieces Brettell, Brooke, and Brenna ~

Write your thoughts here
whether in verse or prose;
whatever comes to mind –
stinky feet or how your heart glows!

Write, write, write –
silly things if you please,

like how you text your sister

nonsense in Japanese!

Write what’s in your head

each and every day –

it’ll keep your thoughts fresh

and your gray matter from decay!

Missed Connection – Sweaty In Union Square

You’re my missed connection –
            not once, but many times
In running shoes with bright, orange laces –
a welcomed distraction for my mind.

Counting hours in the morning
‘til I might see your face –
Some savory eye candy
in a hot ‘n’ sweaty place.

You’re my missed connection –
            not once, but many times
A mere smile and quick hello
            got me weak-kneed every time.

I had whole conversations
            sealed behind these grinning lips;
Couldn’t help but sit and wonder
the taste of a first kiss.

You’re my missed connection –
            not once, but many times
Watching you workout –
glad apodyopsis is not a crime.

Eyes locked and darted, dancing
            in mirrors around the room;
Body heat and pulse rising –
            enough to make me swoon.

You’re my missed connection –
            not once, but many times
I only wish I’d had the nerve
to towel whip you from behind!

Dried Petals Of Me

Souls met and melted snow one, bleak, cold winter.
My heart still sings from words and jokes remembered.
But, oh, what Time quickly dried and blew away –
Those buds that bloomed two, blissful weeks in May.

Dance Of the Dead

Sinking into a snare of

Spider spun cotton,

Contaminating my head,

Navigating the Dance Of the Dead

To the velvety ropes of the underground

Where snakes slither and play

With poison dripping from dagger-like fangs

Through a venomous IV

Meant to silence me.

New Yuck City

“I’m off to New York City,”
Said the girl with big, green eyes.
“I’m tired of bed,
And people have said
The city’s alive all night!”

“I’m off to New York City,”
Said the girl with joy in her eyes.
“Where jazz plays in parks,
Drowning out little dogs’ barks,
And buildings launch through the sky!”

“I’m off to New York City,”
Said the girl with a glint in her eye.
“Where art’s splayed on streets,
And all the people you meet
Sound like international spies!”

“I’m off to New York City,”
Said the girl with a smile in her eyes.
“Where cupcake shops
Crème-fill my every sweet spot
‘Til a sugar rush shoots me high as a kite!”

“I’m back from New York City,”
Said the girl with sad, green eyes.
“Where everyone shoves past
Too furious and fast –
No attempt at acting polite.”

“I’m back from New York City,”
Said the girl with doleful eyes.
“Where sidewalks are piled
With garbage for miles,
Smelling like something died!”

“I’m back from New York City,”
Said the girl with a tear in her eye.
“Where homeless lay claim
To their street corners in shame
As tourists snap shots of their plight.”

“I’m back from New York City,”
Said the girl with fear in her eyes.
“Where dirty critters run amuck
‘Til the only thought that stuck
Was GET ME OUT OF NEW YUCK!”

Bookmarked

I opened a chapter.
You taught me to read.
Then, a book without words
Is all you left me.
I vowed to fill it
With words of my own.
But those pages lay empty
Years after you’ve gone.

One Hour

If we shared only an hour,

            would it be okay?

Because I love another

the other hours of the day.

Rapid Fire

Match flame set to wick.

Two fires ignite into one.

Quick is the stick spent

And the heat’s just begun.
